About

Amadi Ekwutosilam Njoku, also known as Mazi Emeritus, is a Nigerian writer, educator, and cultural advocate with more than a decade of experience in literature and education. His work examines identity, tradition, and personal transformation, often through the eyes of children, adolescents, and adults.

His debut children’s book, The Invincible Will, earned national and international recognition, including the ANA Prize for Children’s Literature (2022), the Tamikio L. Dooley Award (2023), and the Akachi Ezeigbo Prize for Children’s Literature (2024).

He is the author of Against the Wind, the sequel to The Invincible Will and the second book in a planned trilogy that will conclude with Beyond the Finish Line. His other works include Hakeem’s Dream and Other Stories for middle-grade readers, Echoes of Our Voices, a poetry collection for young readers, The Weight of Lies, a crime coming-of-age novel, and Ọ'ọtụ ilụ Amasiri, a folktale collection celebrating the oral traditions of his hometown. His educational text, Eraz Literature-in-English, has helped thousands of Nigerian students prepare for national exams.

Amadi’s writing has appeared in The Nation, Kalahari Review, ANA Review, Daily Sun, and in several anthologies highlighting African literary voices. He has served as Managing Editor of Africa Press Chamber and has taught English and Literature in Lagos, preparing over a thousand students for national and international examinations. He has also received fellowships from the Ebedi International Writers Residency (2023) and Imodoye Writers Residency (2024).

Grounded in his cultural heritage, Amadi founded Amasiri Odyssey, a platform dedicated to preserving the history and traditions of his community. He is a member of SCBWI (US), the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), SBMEN, and ELTAN.

Amadi writes with the conviction that stories can mend what the world breaks. His work stands at the meeting point of education, heritage, and the restorative power of words.

When one of my works titled Echoes of Our Voices (a collection of poems for junior secondary schools) was approved for schools by the Lagos State government in March 2021, I was as pleased as punch, at least, a great and rare inroads it was, for some of us who are into a literary vocation. Every writer's joyous fulfilment comes with being read and this for me, is a huge reward for writing. .

Review of The Invincible Will

The story is set in different places; Amasiri village in Ebonyi State, in South – Eastern region, and Sasa community in Lagos State, South – Western, Nigeria. Through the central character’s ambition to become a successful sprinter in athletics, the author weaves a very engaging story that elicits the importance of holding firm to one’s ambition in life, while striving to get it fulfilled, even if the entire world writes you off as a mere dreamer, due to your body size – whether short, tall, fat or slim.
